– The Engineering Market is Booming

– “The industry is crying out for skilled engineers, but a lot of them don’t realize just how in demand they actually are,” says Daniel W. Langøen, partner at NECON.

He and his colleagues receive daily inquiries from companies looking for expertise – often with an urgent need for immediate start.

– “I think many engineers underestimate how hot the market really is. They might see 70–80 positions listed on job sites like Finn and assume that’s the full picture. But the real demand is several hundred – maybe more. A lot of the requests we get are never advertised publicly,” says Langøen.

A Market Desperate for Talent

NECON can feel the pressure. Several of our clients – large and small – are asking for dozens of engineers at once.

– “When the big operators sweep the market, it creates a vacuum. That has a ripple effect throughout the entire supply chain. Some companies send us 2–3 requests per day. The demand is massive, especially within automation and electrical engineering,” Langøen explains.

Opportunities Are Everywhere – If You Know Where to Look

Even with such a heated market, many engineers aren’t actively exploring new opportunities.

– “If you’re even just a little curious but haven’t seriously considered changing jobs, chances are you’ll end up staying put. But career moves are often when you see salary growth. You could end up with more challenging work – and better pay. You just need to take the first step,” he says.

Norway Doesn’t Have Enough Engineers

Langøen is clear: the domestic market can’t meet future demand on its own. This was also true before the oil downturn in 2014, when demand for engineers was overwhelming. NECON is now seeing the same trend again.

– “We often have to recruit internationally to close the gap, but those who already know the market and have local experience are at a clear advantage.”
